SDSU denies report it tried to organize breakaway conference with Mountain West, AAC and Pac-12

San Diego State rebutted a report that the Mountain West Conference foiled the university’s attempt to form a new league with the remnants of the Pac-12 plus the best of the Mountain West and American Athletic Conference.

“SDSU has had no communication with the American Athletic Conference, nor any of its member institutions. SDSU continues to be an active participant with the Mountain West Conference as the conference assesses the best path forward during this turbulent time in our industry.”reverse merger with the Pac-12

Nevarez said she called the meeting to update presidents on various conference realignment scenarios, including adding schools, losing schools or some sort of merger. De la Torre is known to have been disenchanted with the Mountain West and expressed those sentiments to fellow presidents. Representatives from both leagues held preliminary conversations this week, although more advanced discussions probably can’t happen until Stanford and Cal sort through their options. The two Bay Area schools reportedly are talking to the ACC or may go independent.
