While at SDCC2023, Screen Rant spoke to ItLivesInside filmmaker Bishal Dutta about his directorial debut, genre influences, and what inspired the new Indian-American horror movie:
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT It Lives Inside follows Sam, an Indian-American high school student who struggles against her Indian heritage and wants only to be like everyone else. After a falling out with her former best friend, she unwittingly releases a demonic spirit that feeds on her loneliness. Sam will have to face questions about her identity and relationships if she has any hopes of defeating the demon.
I think about Nightmare on Elm Street 2 is a great one, John Carpenter's Christine is a great one, and then I love the Canadian film, Ginger Snaps. These are all movies that I think you look at them and they're very entertainment forward, they're so fun to watch, but you leave feeling like, "Oh my God, I got so much out of this. So much that is sticking with me, and is about real human experiences beyond the fear by itself.
How does exploring this genre through the eyes of Indian American characters offer a fresh perspective? Bishal Dutta: Absolutely. I can tell you that my understanding of filmmaking is night and day. A lot of that is learning from really some of the best people in the business, right? That's what made this such a huge opportunity for me. But for me, some of the things I learned... I think a lot more about... Even more now, about the audience experience. I think that that has become so important to me.
