The Campbell River School District hopes Carihi Secondary students will be back to in-person learning in early December, though some will be temporarily shuttled to off-campus classrooms after a fire damaged sections of the school.
“…we are still waiting for air quality testing to be completed by an independent third party, as required by WorkSafeBC. This testing is crucial before school staff can re-enter the building,” the district added in the community email.around 11 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, according to Campbell River Fire Chief Dan Verdun. He said the fire was substantial, and when firefighters arrived, they were surprised by how quickly it had spread.
The district says both A- and B-wings have been “securely sealed off to prevent access,” with the front of the gym and B-wing “fenced off for added safety.”Carihi has been closed since Friday, and as a result of the fire, the school is currently down “13 different spaces,” notes Manning.
