Curling athletes from teams competing in the 2025 Scotties Tournament of Hearts visited Westmount Public School in Thunder Bay, sharing their knowledge and passion for the sport with enthusiastic students.
Students at Westmount Public School in Thunder Bay , Ontario, had a special opportunity to learn about curling and meet some of the athletes competing in the upcoming 2025 Scotties Tournament of Hearts. On Thursday, the school gymnasium transformed into a curling clinic as members of three teams slated to compete in the national championship shared their knowledge and passion for the sport with the enthusiastic students. Alberta's Selena Sturmay, who opens play against B.C.
's Corryn Brown, emphasized the importance of inspiring young curlers and spreading the joy of the game. Her team, one of three to pre-qualify for the Scotties based on their ranking, was joined by all five members of Prince Edward Island's entry and two of Kate Cameron's Manitoba champion squad. Both Sturmay and P.E.I. skip Jane DiCarlo highlighted the significance of giving back to the community and sharing their love for curling with the next generation. They recalled their own experiences learning the sport at a similar age and were impressed by the students' knowledge and enthusiasm. DiCarlo noted that the school's passion for curling was evident in their understanding of the rules and terminology. Adding to the excitement, Westmount Public School boasts a prominent connection to curling history. Diane Adams, a former second for Heather Houston's Scotties champion teams in 1988 and 1989, is a visible staff member at the school. Adams shared her excitement about the event and the opportunity to connect with current-day curlers, emphasizing the importance of exposing children to various sports in today's tech-driven world. The opening draw of the 2025 Scotties Tournament of Hearts kicks off Friday night at 7 p.m. at Fort William Gardens.
