Scottie Scheffler had a moment of notable sportsmanship on Sunday at the Presidents Cup.
Sunday at the Presidents Cup at Medinah Country Club outside Chicago, Scottie Scheffler and Nico Echavarria of Colombia were late in their singles match. Scheffler was 3-up on Echavarria with five holes to play … and Scheffler also happens to be ranked No. 1 in the world, while Echavarria is ranked 61st. This wasn't exactly a fair fight.
That didn't stop someone in the gallery from elbowing their way into the match. As Echavarria teed off on the 14th hole, someone shouted "Go Scottie!
" in his backswing. Echavarria dropped his club, and Scheffler immediately barked at the offender, saying, "There's no place for that.
" Up on the green, Scheffler conceded a 32-foot par putt to Echavarria, a classy gesture that seemed as much an apology for the fan's behavior as anything else. Scheffler would go on to win the match 2&1, helping the United States attempt to rally back from a historic deficit.
"To be honest with you, I don't even really want to talk about it," Scheffler said afterward. "I think there's no real place for that in our game. I think we just leave it at that.
" Fair enough, and that's probably the right thing to do. That, and eject screaming gallery idiots into the parking lot.
