Deja Bù: Mark reconnects with Jessica Harnois, founder Bù Wines | SaltWireRemembrance Day will soon be upon us once again and Canadians from coast to coast to coast will pause for a minute of silent reflection on those men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of Canada.

What made it easier to commemorate these veterans, was that the Canadian sacrifice in those wars had not been in vain.In the Great War, also known as the First World War, Canadian soldiers fought for the British Empire to defeat the Central Powers. In the end, the German, Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires were vanquished and Canada was recognized as an independent nation.

The United Nations condemned the invasion and mounted an international intervention. Canada heeded the call and for the next three years helped to battle the North Koreans to a standstill along the original border. In 1990, Canada once again answered the call, this time in response to Iraq’s invasion of neighbouring Kuwait. In the end the U.S. led coalition was easily able to defeat Saddam Hussein’s invaders and liberate the Kingdom of Kuwait.

To wit: the 1993 U.S. led intervention in Somalia was a failed military venture. The Canadian Airborne Regiment was subsequently disbanded after that deployment when it was revealed that Somali looters had been tortured and killed by Canadian paratroopers.
