This team has an awkward habit of cold shooting at the wrong time

TORONTO — Let us imagine a hypothetical basketball team. It’s a good team, wins a lot of games, but tends to fall apart at playoff time.

Toronto coach Nick Nurse often talks about how good shooting can be contagious. It helps an individual player when the first couple go in, and when one guy starts hitting them, others will follow. The actual evidence for this is much less clear, but at the least, players believe it.But a poor shooting night can also infect a whole team, too, Nurse said, as his team prepared for Game 3 on Thursday night.

Still, the Raptors had their open shots. They missed eight of 10 three-point attempts in the first half when the nearest defender was more than six feet away, per NBA.com, and missed 12 of their first 16 such attempts in Game 2. Shooting 25 per cent on wide-open shots from beyond the arc for three quarters is how you end up scoring 89 points in a game.

This is, obviously, the right attitude. But it also means that there is a bit of a high-wire act to today’s NBA, where even the most well constructed teams are vulnerable to the unpredictable gust of wind that is a night when the shots from distance do not find the basket.
