There is no evidence that Cheveldayoff ever tried to reach out to Beach, or give him his backing, or even ask if he was OK
And that was it. It’s a statement that was almost certainly passed through a gauntlet of lawyers who squeezed out any word that could possibly suggest guilt and, thus, liability, but what was left was a few sentences without an ounce of contrition.
In his statement that announced no discipline against Cheveldayoff, the NHL commissioner said he didn’t want to paint “everyone with any association to this terrible matter with the same broad brush,” which is a reasonable enough starting position.
And yet, Bettman’s Friday statement says Cheveldayoff’s full involvement in the matter “was limited exclusively to his attendance at a single meeting.”
