With the Brooklyn Nets, Nash is taking over a team that at once has accomplished next to nothing, but is also in something close to win\u002Dnow mode

Kevin Durant, the former MVP who was last seen limping off the Scotiabank Arena floor with a torn Achilles in the 2019 Finals against the Raptors, should make his debut for Brooklyn in Nash’s first game as coach. He left the Warriors, where he worked with Nash, for the Nets last summer, with the expectation that he would sit out the whole of this season.

It’s a lot for a first-time coach to digest. Nash, 46, hasn’t had to deal with the daily grind of NBA life since he retired from an 18-year playing career in 2015, and now he will be doing that, while learning on the job as the top guy on staff, and managing a team that at full health is theoretically an Eastern Conference contender. Tsai, who bought out former Nets owner Mikhail Prohkorov last year for a reported US2.4 billion, didn’t spend all that money to finish seventh in the East.

Nash, the Canadian basketball icon from Victoria, B.C., whose greatness is reflected in the talent of his countrymen now littering the NBA, following the trail he blazed, will be in neither of those situations. He’s taking over a team that at once has accomplished next to nothing, but is also in something close to win-now mode. And he will only have to look across the Brooklyn Bridge to Madison Square Garden to see what can happen when a billionaire owner gets impatient.
