actress clarified her remarks and said that they were “edited for click bait” and “widely taken out of context.”
“The question I was answering in my conversation with the contemporary artist, David Salle, was about the confrontation between political correctness and art,” she said. “I personally feel that, in an ideal world, any actor should be able to play anybody and Art, in all forms, should be immune to political correctness. That is the point I was making, albeit didn’t come across that way.
It has been a bit of rocky road for Johansson when it comes to navigating the topic of diversity and inclusive casting in Hollywood. Many in the Asian American community criticized her for taking the lead role in the 2017 live-action adaptation of the anime Last year, she received backlash for her recent choice to play massage parlor owner Dante “Tex” Gill in the mob drama.
