Two attempts have been made in the State College area with this method so far, police said.
Multiple people in the State College area have received calls from someone pretending to be a local police officer and asking for gift cards and cash, authorities said.
Police urged the public not to provide any personal, bank account or financial information over the phone — even to someone who says they are in law enforcement. Law enforcement officers will always direct residents to the courts for payment, Ferguson Township police said.
