“There’s a host of reasons why people or companies don’t report,” Joyce said. Some estimates are that only 10 per cent of victims report being scammed. “Police are not going to charge their way out this problem, it’s just too rampant and too widespread,” Joyce said. “People that are doing this could be across the street or half a world away. Our best tool is going to be to educating our citizens as to the signs of when they are being scammed.”
Joyce said people are buying into suggestions to buy cryptocurrency and then Googling it and choosing the first company they see without doing due diligence.
