Say goodbye to sad desk lunches with a playbook for the new midday meal via nparts

Our cookbook of the week is Modern Lunch by Allison Day, creator of the award-winning blog Yummy Beet. To try a recipe from the book, check out: Triple beet and smoked mackerel grain bowl, rustic spelt quiche with asparagus and new potatoes, and Turkish poached eggs with eggplant on socca crepes.

Author Allison Day has the antidote. In her third cookbook, Modern Lunch , she recasts the midday meal as colourful, energizing, flavourful and satiating. Rather than a means to an end, these are lunches to anticipate and savour. With upwards of 100 creative recipes, and tips for crafting seasonal DIY lunchboxes and last-minute meals, it’s a playbook for making lunch special.

Day’s book showcases accessible strategies and fresh flavours. In five sections, she covers lunch to go , lunch at home , sharing lunches for weekends , how to make lunch special and the lunch larder . For packed-lunch novices, she recommends starting small: Make a pot of soup or stew on a Sunday afternoon and build from there. “Scheduling cooking is a big thing that holds people back. But even if you can just take one to two hours on the weekend to cook a few things for even a couple days of lunches, then you can really win lunch,” says Day. “Making it a habit is a really great thing. It doesn’t have to be every day.
