Acclaimed New York saxophonist has played the Bay Area, but never as a bandleader — until now.

On the bright side, tenor saxophonist Wayne Escoffery is introducing himself to the Bay Area music scene as an artist with nothing to prove.

Most recently Israeli bassist Tal Cohen featured Escoffery at Black Cat last February, but when the saxophonist returns to the Tenderloin jazz club for a three-night run Oct. 19-21 the residency marks his Bay Area debut as a bandleader. It’s telling that Escoffery is the junior member of his own band. At Black Cat he’s celebrating the release of his 13th album as a leader or co-leader, “Like Minds” on Smoke Sessions Records, with his working quartet featuring pianist Dave Kikoski, 62, and bassist Ugonna Okegwo, 61 .

“His songs are very challenging and exciting. I’m often doubling the bass lines with Ugonna and at the same time I’m feeding Wayne some pretty advanced harmonica progressions. He likes the drums to be very active, to keep things moving.” “In a lot of ways I consider my time with Harrell a doctoral program in harmony and composition and really being creative at a high level,” Escoffery said. “He’s a compositional genius, a master at writing very complex pieces that don’t sound complex.”
