‘If you miss one, you still have another chance to put stuff out the next time’: Rochelle Rodrigues has created an online space for locals to go treasure hunting for free items throughout the year

Sault Ste. Marie is no longer limited to just one ‘Trash to Treasure’ day a year thanks to a social media-savvy resident.

“Just after the city did their Trash to Treasure event in June, I would hear people say, ‘I wish they would do it monthly’ or ‘I wish they would do it again,’” she told SooToday. “So I thought, 'Why can’t we?'” Once an event day is voted on by the group, she creates a page for members to post their street along with a description or picture of the items they’ll have available. Items must go out by 8 a.m. and be brought back inside by 9 p.m.

A part-time porter at the hospital, Rodrigues notes that Trash to Treasure is much more convenient than garage sales in several ways, especially for residents who aren’t looking to sell the items they’re wishing to part with.
