A 44-year-old driver from Sault Ste. Marie was charged with impaired driving and refusing to take a breathalyzer test following a single-vehicle collision that occurred on Friday evening.
On Friday evening, Sault Ste. Marie Police officers responded to a single-vehicle collision on Old Garden River Road near Third Line East. A 911 caller reported a vehicle driving in the wrong lane had struck a snowbank. Upon arrival, officers discovered the driver, later identified as 44-year-old Amrinder Brar, being treated by Emergency Medical Services.
During their interaction with Brar, officers observed signs that led them to suspect his ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired due to alcohol consumption. Officers administered a demand for a breath sample, and Brar provided one into an approved screening device, which indicated a fail. As a result, Brar was arrested and transported to the Police Services Building. At the station, Brar provided one suitable breath sample, which registered above the legal limit for alcohol. However, he refused to provide another sample. Brar faces charges of impaired driving and refusing to comply with a breathalyzer test. He was released on an appearance notice and is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court
