“In December 2013, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 2015 to 2024 to be the International Decade for People of African Descent and it denotes that we are all connected.” States chose a libation that she said she hoped would assist in making that connection.“This regional office is really important and it is important that the Office of African Nova Scotia Affairs be present, and that the community sees it as a resource.
“With more than 50 African Nova Scotian communities located across the province from Yarmouth to Sydney, it is important to ensure that ANSA is well equipped to serve communities and we’ve taken steps to make sure that happens. Having a dedicated associate deputy minister, new program administration officers and three new regional offices will certainly be a major help to have equitable access to the services and opportunities that our province has to offer.
Associate Deputy Minister Dwayne Provo, who was appointed to the post in October 2021, provided background on the Office of African Nova Scotia Affairs. He said it is the only government office in Canada that is uniquely dedicated to the needs of people of African descent in Canada. Over the last year, he noted, ANSA has moved a lot of initiatives forward, such as supporting the Black Cultural Centre to be able to fulfil its mandate and its strategic plan.
“This is about us changing the way things are. This is about us re-energizing, creating some opportunity so we can move the ball forward,” Provo explained, used a football analogy. “We’re not just opening up an office, we are opening up the world and opportunity to young people sitting here today.
