One of the things that this book shows is the birth of a border and how it grows organically over time, how it seems so important to some people at the same moment that for others, it seems completely insignificant.I grew up on both sides of the border. My whole life has been moving back and forth across this border. I was curious about its history because, like many of the people today and in the past, there were moments in my life where the border seemed unavoidable and incredibly powerful.

I was interested in trying to figure out where this border came from and why it seemed to matter in some fields and then totally seemed to be absent in others. And that required a lot of historical work across dozens of archives across Canada and the United States, to rebuild this complicated history of something that sometimes I think we take for granted.Article content

Q: What stands out from your research that you think is important to know about the history of the border? One of the things I think we forget is that this border is not built on empty land. This border is built on Indigenous territories that had their own boundaries, had their own systems of government, had their own languages and cultures. The process of building almost any border in the world is as much about erasing things that were there before as it is about actually creating something new.

Our history is tied up in histories of other nations, especially Indigenous nations in Canada. But it’s also tied up in immigration policy. Because of its multinational nature, understanding even a simple border separating Canada and the United States requires understanding a much more global history.Article content
