The StarPhoenix is reviewing shows at this year’s Saskatoon Fringe Festival, which runs Aug. 3-12.
The heart of this play comes back to its fundamental grounding in reality — true stories, filled in with vivid facts and details. Army jargon becomes the lingua franca of otherwise indescribable experiences, and the slow normalization of death and violence is all the more chilling by the way it’s shown through casual examples.A veteran performer with decades of material to draw from, Nicholas Rice brings a homey, welcoming atmosphere to the stage.
But there is no doubt that with his gentle, poetic cadence and obvious enthusiasm, Rice is a charming storyteller with plenty of joy, history and wisdom to share.Creating an entertaining theatre show for kids is always a tall order. Creating a kid-centred show that will have the grown-ups smiling, dancing and singing along too is even more difficult.
Nothing about Gingy Saves the Day reinvents the wheel: It feels a lot like a live, musical episode of Sesame Street. But as a first introduction to the Saskatoon Fringe Festival for young theatregoers, it can’t be beat.“The Cucamonga Lounge and Hotel”At first, this seems like a typical workplace comedy — an overworked hotel employee and his newly-hired coworker are trying to muddle through a job from hell, while their eccentric, demanding boss and high-strung guests keep piling on the pressure.
At the heart of the play is Richelle’s grief for her late husband, and her all-consuming drive to keep the failing hotel afloat to preserve his legacy. So long as the hotel still stands, she reasons, she hasn’t lost him completely.
