The last three decades have brought hard\u002Dfought victories, but there is much more work to be done to address HIV and AIDS in Saskatoon.

But as advocates and supporters recently gathered for the 30th anniversary Saskatoon AIDS Walk, they reflected on why the walk isHundreds of people marched in support of AIDS awareness, support, and prevention downtown in Saskatoon on Sunday, Sept. 29, 2019.

“I miss the people that died of AIDS, and I cherish their memory,” said Claire Card, who has been coming to AIDS Walk Saskatoon for 10 years. “This is one way to support them. People my age have lost a lot of friends — sometimes family members, colleagues — to the epidemic. So I take it very personally, and I feel that the larger we can build a community of understanding and make some progress, the better.

“Although many organizations are working towards providing more harm reduction, it’s still not easy to get your hands on clean use supplies,” Cottrell said. “What we know, from our work, is that the more access you have to harm reduction material and supplies, the less likely you are to contract HIV. There are some amazing programs that exist in this province. But getting the word out, and people actually being able to access those programs, is much more difficult.

“Unless we see some drastic changes in belief and energy and support in this province, our negative trajectory is only going to continue,” she said.“Unfortunately, in this province, that’s not looking likely,” she said. “With the continued policy changes and continued lack of funding to support harm reduction efforts from our province, I think we’re going to see an ever-increasing amount of HIV transmission.
