Someone impersonated a supplier and changed banking information. Deputy minister Blair Wagar said most of the money can be recovered.
“They impersonated, basically … a long-term vendor of ours,” he said.
The ministry has turned to MNP, one of Canada’s largest accounting firms, to look at the incident and evaluate the controls the ministry has in place for areas of improvement. Among the tips the FBI provides is to carefully examine email addresses, URLs and spellings used in any correspondence for slight differences, and to verify payment or purchase requests in person or by phone.
