Killings on James Smith Cree Nation and in Weldon will be probed, with separate inquest into the death of Myles Sanderson, who died in police custody.
A public inquest will be held into the deaths of 11 people in a rampage this month, Saskatchewan’s chief coroner has announced.on James Smith Cree Nation, including one of the brothers charged, and one person dead in the nearby village of Weldon.
Weighill said the inquests are necessary because there are still many unanswered questions after Sanderson’s death in custody and said it would be a “methodical and complete investigation.” The jury, which will be up to six people, will determine the cause of death based on the facts presented. “The public inquest in Saskatchewan will serve the same purpose, with the added ability to have a jury hear the facts, make recommendations and hopefully prevent future occurrences … A jury will hear the evidence, they will weigh the evidence and make recommendations. That doesn’t happen in an inquiry,” he said.
