The president of SUNnurses is calling for a task force to address hospitals she says are in midst of 'chaos' and 'collapse' skpoli

Health Minister Paul Merriman agreed pressure was felt this week in both Regina and Saskatoon, but added “there are always ebbs and flows” within the system.

Asked if he was downplaying the current reality of the strain on health-care workers in the province, Merriman replied, “I think I’m accepting it for what it is.” Tracy Zambory, President of the Saskatchewan Union of Nurses sits for a portrait at her office on December 15, 2022 in Regina. In light of this, Zambory is renewing calls for the establishment of a “nursing task force” in the midst of what she calls a “nursing crisis.” There is precedent for such a task force, with ones being struck in 2008 and 2009 as working groups established to address “dire nursing shortages.

“We all agree that more people in the system is going to help out with the pressure,” said Merriman. Already, Merriman feels efforts by the province have helped to stabilize things within the system, pointing to 70 additional nurses hired and 39 nurses en route from the Philippines. One immediate stopgap would be to bring in incentives for mid to late-term nursing staff since all incentives are for new and recently graduated nurses.
