As red carpets begin to unfurl and champagne corks go pop, Sari Ruda, the widow of Toronto International Film Festival co-founder Bill Marshall, cannot help but get nostalgic. “It is bittersweet.” StarTogether

As red carpets begin to unfurl and champagne corks go pop, Ruda cannot help but get nostalgic. The widow of Toronto International Film Festival co-founder Bill Marshall – one of a trio of visionaries who hatched a little event that would soon grow into a giant player in the movie-celebrity ecosystem – she channels her late husband well.

Five years have passed since we lost Marshall – the city, in the process, losing one of its quintessential characters – and does Ruda have stories. Like this one: “A very beloved Canadian, whose body of work spans over six decades, lost his briefcase, which was filled mostly with lots of cocaine, but also some cash and a passport. Bill had to locate and retrieve it before the media got wind of the stash.

They worked together and they played together. “I think we ping-ponged off each other so well as he was always a big-picture guy,” she says. “I was more of the get-it-done person, but also creative. I’d take his ideas and make them happen. The maverick Marshall would go on to spearhead umpteen initiatives in town, such as the McLuhan Festival. His gift, Ruda says, came down to this: “Bill was so brilliant that he would come up with a new idea that was so obvious when you heard it and yet so unique that you would be certain as soon as you heard it that it already existed.”Grief is its own dance, Ruda confides. “I’m very lucky,” she says. “I know a lot of people who give up the ghost when they lose someone they love.
