Longtime coach uncertain about his future on the basketball sideline; 'Will I coach again? I really don’t know'
Terry Tucker, who won 338 games in 16 seasons as boys basketball coach at San Ysidro High School and popularized the “Border Boyz” mentality at the South Bay school, has resigned.
His teams went 29-1 in three Central League seasons, winning the league title twice. The 2005-06 Colts team won the CIF-San Diego Section Division III championship.Tucker’s first San Ysidro team in 2007-08 went 1-26. After that, San Yisdro had nine 20-win seasons, won 10 league championships and a pair of San Diego Section titles — including the Open Division championship in 2021-22.
“That first year at San Ysidro was tough, but I loved those kids,” Tucker said. “The guys weren’t that talented, but they showed up, played hard.The Cougars won at least 20 games each of the next four seasons and had another four-season stretch of 20 wins before going 18-13 last season.
