On their sixth try at a SoCal Regional soccer title, the top-seeded San Pasqual High boys finally earned one with a 1-0 victory over San Clemente
And on the sixth try in the Southern California Regional playoffs, San Pasqual High’s boys soccer team finally got it right. After falling short in their first five trips, the No. 1-seeded Golden Eagles partied hard at home Saturday night, knocking off No. 2 San Clemente 1-0 to win the Div. II Southern California championship.
The game was as tight as the final score indicated. San Clemente outshot the Eagles 19-9. The visitors racked up numerous close chances but couldn’t slip the ball past goalie Derek Reyna. The win was particularly rewarding for Reyna. He hadn’t played in four weeks because of a broken right little finger, but Burson followed a hunch and went with his No. 1 keeper.
Reyna, who had a cast removed three days before the game, admitted his stomach was churning leading up to the game. The game’s only goal was a piece of art. Charaboy Iniestra, who scored a school record 34 goals this season, had a pass come his way about 30 yards out. But Iniestra pretended he was going to take the ball but instead let it play through to Ian Exline.“I’ve done this 100 times in practice,” said Exline. “I hit it off the inside of my right foot and it had a little curl.”The Eagles wrapped up the season with a 21-6-2 record. San Clemente finished 15-4-8.
