The San Mateo County Office of the District Attorney will lead the investigation and conduct an independent review of the incident, the Sheriff’s Office says.
Authorities say correctional staff witnessed Sulapas experiencing the emergency in the intake and booking area of the jail at 3:17 p.m., shortly after she was booked into the facility. She was taken to the Kaiser Permanente Redwood City Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead around 6:30 p.m.
Authorities did not immediately specify a preliminary cause of death, nor the reason for her incarceration. The San Mateo County district attorney’s office will lead the investigation and conduct an independent review of the incident, the Sheriff’s Office said.
