Federal authorities say Franklin Barrett Sechriest, 18, of San Marcos, set fire to Congregation Beth Israel synagogue in Austin on Oct. 31.Franklin Barrett Sechriest, 19, was charged with one count of damage of religious property, one count of use of fire to commit a federal crime and one count of arson.

The U.S Attorney’s Office said Sechriest set fire to the Congregation Beth Israel synagogue on Oct. 31, 2021. He is seen on surveillance video carrying a 5-gallon container and toilet paper toward the synagogue’s sanctuary moments before cameras captured the glow of a fire starting, according to a U.S. Attorney’s Office news release. Seconds later, Sechriest is seen jogging away from the sanctuary and toward a waiting vehicle.Arson investigators reported finding burn patterns from a liquid accelerant, a federal complaint said.

The investigation revealed that days before the fire, the vehicle that Sechriest was seen driving had entered and exited the synagogue’s parking lot multiple times. The driver stopped in front of a building adjacent to the synagogue and shined a flashlight toward it before driving away.On Nov.
