The 8-month-old baby died earlier this month; a short time later, the mother was hospitalized, then arrested after her discharge from medical care.
SAN JOSE — A woman has been arrested in connection with the death of her infant child, who was found unresponsive at their East San Jose home earlier this month, police said.
According to sources familiar with the investigation, the woman told authorities that she smothered the child and the child’s twin, who survived, against her body while trying to breastfeed them. San Jose police officers were called Nov. 4 to a home on Hurlingham Way, off South White Road a few blocks from Mt. Pleasant High School, for a report of unconscious 8-month-old twins. Authorities say they arrived to find that one child was not breathing; rescuers began performing CPR on the infant until paramedics arrived and rushed both children to hospitals.
The infant who was not breathing died the next day, police said, while the other twin survived. San Jose homicide detectives determined that the children were in the care of their mother, 29-year-old Celina Juarez, when they were found in distress. Soon after, detectives and a Santa Clara County child-death response team launched an investigation.
As the investigation got underway, the children’s mother “suffered from an unknown medical emergency” and was hospitalized until Wednesday, police said.
