Owner Hway-ling Hsu expanded sales opportunities during the pandemic
Talk about an encore career.owner Hway-ling Hsu was a lawyer for years, then transitioned to making brittles and baking pies and cookies commercially more than a decade ago in San Jose. Many of her fans first discovered her creative nut brittles and galette-style pies, filled with orchard-fresh fruit, at farmers markets or a few select shops. These days you can find her goodies in loads of Bay Area places — and have them shipped across the country.
Sweetdragon Baking makes several brittles, including Blacik Sesame, Serrano Peanut, Ballpark, Pistachio Vanilla, Coconut Cashew and the seasonal Pumpkin Ale Brittle, above. , Not really. Once I started the business, I spent a lot of time consulting YouTube and doing experiments. Later, I hired an experienced baker who thankfully already knew how to make pies.We’ve been cooking here since 2014 but not open for retail sales.
Q: Looks like you’ve sold your brittles far and wide. A hotel in Southport, Connecticut, stocked their mini-bars with your spicy Serrano Brittle?That has happened. Besides online shipping, we sell in San Jose at Chromatic Coffee, Haberdasher, O’Brien’s at History Park, Roy’s Station; in Milpitas at Sugar Mama Desserts; and at various Whole Foods Markets. SanJoseMade.com does local deliveries. During summer, our pies are at Andy’s Orchard in Morgan Hill.
