Authorities said a 49-year-old driver fled the scene after rear-ending another vehicle, causing it to crash into the center divider and killing the driver.
SAN JOSE — A man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and hit and run after he fled the scene of a deadly Interstate 680 crash on foot in North San Jose late Sunday night, authorities said.
According to a press release from the California Highway Patrol, the incident took place around 10:50 p.m., just north of the Berryessa Road on-ramp to northbound I-680. The driver of a GMC, a 49-year old man, rear-ended a Ford at a high rate of speed in the second lane from the left. The collision sent the Ford across the left-most lane and shoulder and into the concrete barrier in the center median. The GMC veered across three lanes and the shoulder on the right side of the highway. It came to rest on a grass field.
The driver of the Ford, a 64-year old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. His full identification is pending notification of next of kin, per the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.
