“We need to rebuild the trust with the public,” said a San Jose councilwoman.

As COVID-related health orders are being eased across the Bay Area, San Jose is joining the trend by ending one booster shot mandate and potentially loosening up another.

“This is not a belief that somehow or another boosters are not what we need to be doing, but rather a recognition that as time moves on and we have seen a substantial decline in cases, that we should take a posture that enables us to safely operate with the prior protections in place,” Mayor Sam Liccardo said during Tuesday’s council discussion about the public venue policy.

The council also discussed the employee booster mandate behind closed doors Tuesday morning, but made no public announcement later. As San Jose struggles to get hundreds of employees to comply with its mandate, city leaders are expected to modify the policy later this week. “This is good news,” Cody said, adding that the county would also drop masking requirements for K-12 schools once the state’s order lifts on March 12.

Dolan Becker, San Jose’s director of civic innovation, recommended the city adopt this approach to minimize the public’s confusion and appease venue owners and operators who are growing tired of the constant changes.
