Dozens of tents are neatly spaced out on a street near San Francisco City Hall as part of a “safe sleeping village' opened last week. San Francisco is joining other U.S. cities in authorizing homeless tent encampments in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In order to address the issue, the city is setting up sites called"Safe Sleeping Villages," where the homeless can set up tents in a designated clean and safe area.

At San Francisco's largest homeless shelter, Saint Vincent De Paul Society's Multi Service Center South, 95 homeless people and 10 staff members tested positive for the coronavirus in early April. The center was closed for less than two weeks, but underwent a deep cleaning and has new socially distanced beds in place.
