The San Francisco Department of Public Health issued an alert warning of cocaine circulating in the drug supply that may contain fentanyl. The San Francisco Department of Public Health issued an alert Thursday warning city residents of the risks of
after reporting"three fatal and nine non-fatal fentanyl overdoses among people in San Francisco who reportedly intended to only use cocaine."dead in a Mission District apartment after using what they thought was cocaine.Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid that can be 50 times more powerful than heroin, health officials said. Like all opioids, it's a respiratory depressant and can impact the user's ability to breathe.
The drug was created in the 1960s to manage pain after surgery, and its clinical use expanded in the 1990s with the introduction of the extended release patch that is typically used to treat advanced cancer pain. "In San Francisco, fentanyl is typically sold as a powder and may have a similar appearance to stimulants like cocaine, leading to unintentional use of fentanyl among people who are intending to use stimulants," SFDPH said. It's also made into counterfeit pills that look like other prescription opioids. People who use stimulants may not have tolerance to opioids, making the risk of death or overdose high if fentanyl is unintentionally taken.
