Emergency rent vouchers are helping San Diegans challenged by homelessness.
The money for the emergency vouchers comes from the American Rescue Plan. The vouchers went to cities across the U.S., but San Diego was especially successful in making sure they were used.
While the rent vouchers are making a small difference, they can't keep all San Diegans from falling into homelessness. According to the regional homeless task force, 759 people came off the streets last month, but 994 people became homeless for the first time in December. Federal funding for the emergency housing vouchers has not been extended, but housing advocates are hoping the vouchers plan serves as a model for future programs. Elo-Rivera said the San Diego City Council is also looking into new tenant protections as efforts are made to try to keep more people from falling into homelessness.
