David Bennett, San Diego Opera's general director, said the company 'cut our losses' in response to lower single- and subscription-ticket sales and sharply higher expenses

San Diego Opera has canceled the final production of its current season, the chamber opera “The Falling and the Rising,” citing a mix of lower-than-expected ticket sales and rising expenses.

“Looking forward to next year, the board and I together made the decision that we should cut our losses here with this chamber opera, which I believe in very deeply. But response has been very tepid, both with marketing and in seeking sponsorships for it,” he said.

“We wanted to come back with a nice robust season, and we made conservative projections for box office and for contribute income,” he said.
