Randy Mize, who has been with the county public defense office for 35 years, made the announcement in an email to staff this week
San Diego County Public Defender Randy Mize has announced he will retire, ending more than three decades with the agency that represents about 90 percent of people charged with crimes in local courts.
The selection of the public defender is made by the county’s chief administrative officer and is not subject to approval by the county Board of Supervisors. The current CAO is Helen Robbins-Meyer, who was scheduled to retire herself but has agreed to a six-month extension in the wake of the turmoil caused by the sexual harassment allegations against resigning Supervisor Nathan Fletcher.
