Latest payouts come in wake of audit showing city spent $220M over nine years on litigation settlements.
San Diego paid out $400,000 Tuesday to settle lawsuits alleging the city is responsible for significant injuries caused by poorly maintained roads and sidewalks.
Greenwood’s lawsuit says the damaged pavement was dangerous because it was not easy to spot for a pedestrian. The suit also blames city officials for not adequately warning people and for not prioritizing repairs. Marguerite Coats filed a lawsuit in 2020 claiming she was injured that January when she tripped and fell while walking on a raised portion of sidewalk located in the 5100 block of Diane Avenue in North Clairemont.
The council’s approval of the settlement comes with a July 29 civil trial scheduled for the case by Superior Court Judge Eddie Sturgeon. The council previously approved the deal in March in a session closed to the public.
