The city of San Antonio reported a nearly 6% decrease in crime over the last year, with property crimes down 7.7%. City officials credited the decline to increased police patrols, a result of budget allocations made a few years ago. While some categories like animal cruelty, pornography, and prostitution saw increases, the overall trend points to a safer city.
The city's Public Safety Committee got an update on crime trends today, and the news is generally pretty good.SAN ANTONIO - The city's Public Safety Committee got an update on crime trends today, and the news is generally pretty good.
We went through the presentation Tuesday, and we found the message from Police Chief McManus: crime is down, and arrests are up. Overall, crime was down nearly 6% over last year, including property crimes which were down 7.7 percent.City officials credited the downward trend with having more officers on the street, which was originally budgeted a couple of years ago. "As the chief mentioned as the council has approved more additional officers to be added in the last few years, we're beginning to see the results of more patrols on the streets, more work to do, but that's the benefit of having more officers, their availability has increased." “That's what we've been talking about for 2 years, more officers on patrol the quicker we can get to some of these calls and stop and deter crime before it happens. We're just now getting that initial batch of 117 new officers from the previous budget on the street." There were some categories that saw an increase, including cases of animal cruelty, pornography or obscene materials, and prostitution.
