A 28-year-old man drowned while swimming in Lake Conroe on Monday, according to Montgomery County Constables Office Precinct 1.

Binh Le, of San Antonio, was in shallow water when he had stepped onto a steep drop-off"causing him to lose his footing and become distressed in the water," according to officials. Some people nearby tried to help Le, but were unsuccessful. A 911 call came into the Montgomery County dispatch center at around 2:53 p.m. about Le, who was waving his hands for help when the caller lost sight of him.

Le was recovered by emergency responders using sonar equipment. An autopsy of the body has been ordered.Authorities urged all swimmers on Lake Conroe to use life jackets regardless of personal comfort in the water.in the Houston area over the 4th of July weekend. A body matching the description of a disappeared swimmer was recovered from Galveston Bay on Monday.

Texas has 1.37 drowning deaths per 100,000 people each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
