The funding is a new phase for Ready to Work, the city’s sales tax-funded job training program.

The City Council on Thursday signed off on a nearly $3 million subsidy for area employers to train new and current employees — a move the city calls a natural extension of its slow-moving jobs program. That money will be split between 31 companies to provide on-the-job training for 1,371 area workers — a mix of new hires and existing employees.

Ramsey told reporters Thursday that funding on-the-job training had always been part of the plan for Ready to Work. When City Council is asked in June to approve Ready to Work’s fiscal year 2025 program budget, it could include more money for employer job training, said City Manager Erik Walsh. “We think there’s a lot more interest in these types of programs,” he said.
