When the UFL released the schedule for its inaugural season, San Antonio Brahmas offensive coordinator AJ Smith quickly found and circled the game vs. the Arlington Renegades on the calendar. Before shifting to San Antonio with coach Wade Phillips and the bulk of the Brahmas’ staff, Smith was the offensive coordinator with the XFL ’s Houston Roughnecks last year, leading the team to the top spot in the South Division and a playoff matchup against Arlington.

” A 29-year-old veteran who played three seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars after going undrafted out of Stetson in 2017, Payne returns as the focal point of Arlington’s defense as he’s tied for third in the UFL with 27 tackles this season. But the Renegades as a whole have struggled, ranking second-to-last in the league by allowing 21.8 points per game and giving up a UFL-worst 110 rushing yards per game.
