Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Samuel Ersson has been selected to replace injured New Jersey Devils netminder Jacob Markstrom on Sweden's roster for the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off. The tournament, organized by the NHL, will see Sweden face Canada, Finland, and the United States.
STOCKHOLM (AP) — Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Samuel Ersson has been called up to Sweden 's roster for the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off as a replacement for New Jersey's Jacob Markstrom , who is sidelined due to a lower-body injury. Sweden national team coach Sam Hallam announced the change on Wednesday, two weeks before the tournament's opening game.
Sweden will kick off their campaign against Canada on February 12 in Montreal, followed by a match against Finland on February 15 and a final encounter with the United States in Boston on February 17. Ersson, 25, joins Minnesota's Filip Gustavsson and Ottawa's Linus Ullmark as Sweden's goalkeeping options. Markstrom's absence is expected to last at least a month. This marks Ersson's fifth international appearance for his country. He previously helped Sweden secure a bronze medal at the 2024 World Championships. Sweden's national team may face additional roster challenges as Vegas center William Karlsson and Minnesota defenseman Jonas Brodin are also dealing with injuries. Canada is also dealing with a roster change, as two-time Stanley Cup-winning defenseman Alex Pietrangelo withdrew last week. The Golden Knights stated that Pietrangelo's decision was due to an unspecified ailment and preparations for the remainder of the regular season, despite his ongoing participation in the regular season.
