Following the federal government's designation of Samidoun as a terrorist entity—made a week after Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre called for the ban—a civil liberties group is warning that the terror listing process may be getting politicized. On Oct. 15, Public Safety Canada announced that Samidoun was listed as a terrorist entity under the Criminal Code, an action it said was taken in “concert” with the United States.
that uses the legal standard of ‘reasonable grounds to believe’ that a particular entity engaged in or facilitated terrorist activities,” said Wark, now a senior fellow at the Centre for International Governance Innovation. “So, it begins with the security and intelligence world.” The public safety minister would then be responsible for scrutinizing the recommendation and deciding whether to make the recommendation to cabinet that an entity be listed, Wark said.
