Salvation Army launches annual Christmas Kettle campaign in Calgary yyc
The kettle campaign has been running since Nov. 18 — with 38 donation locations — but Thursday was the official kickoff to the holiday fundraising for the local arm of the Sally Ann with its annual Hope in the City event, which is welcoming donors in person for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic struck.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary SUN, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.
“We’ve noticed more and more people coming to us for assistance because they have less, so they need some more support . . . Quite a few families are coming to us for the first time,” Venables said, speaking with Postmedia ahead of the function at Calgary’s Hyatt Regency on Thursday.Article content “We don’t want anyone to not get any assistance. Our goal is achievable, but it’s necessary so that we can make sure we don’t have to say no to anybody.”
While Venables said the Sally Ann is glad to again host an in-person event after two tough COVID-ridden and cash-strapped holiday seasons, they’re facing new obstacles this year — namely, inflation and the related economic hardships many are experiencing — that are further heightening the need for their services.Mayor Jyoti Gondek was also slated to speak at the event, taking time out of a busy budget week at city hall to give the ceremonial first donation of the year to the campaign.
“She’s taking the time to come and thank and pay tribute to the caring sector of Calgary, the volunteers,” said Venables. “People need to be inspired. People need to know what the city’s up to and how they’re helping, so I’m excited that she’s coming.”Article content
