SaltWire's Atlantic regional weather forecast for October 31, 2023 | SaltWireCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The Salvation Army in Charlottetown is seeing an increased demand for its home heating program.

“The numbers, I would say, they’re starting to get higher earlier. Because last year, we never really got up to the million-dollar mark until November, December.”This year, the provincial government increased the threshold for a single person to $45,000 from $35,000 and for a household to $60,000 from $45,000 annually.

“I think that we are also seeing more demand just because of the cost of living and the cost of fuel."“I think that we are also seeing more demand just because of the cost of living and the cost of fuel. Because there's lots of people that are coming in that are at those higher income thresholds, that you would think, 'Hey, you know, that's a pretty good salary.' But yet, they're having such a hard time making ends meet. So, I think it's a combination.

“If the program wasn't there, I mean, we would try to help them somehow. But at least with the program, we know that we can get them some heat to get through the winter. Some people have said that they don't know what they would do if they didn't have that grant.”The Salvation Army has also hired additional staff to meet up with the demands, he said.
