The Salt Spring Fire Department has lowered its flags to honour retired Deputy Fire Chief Don Irwin, who passed away from cancer.

Irwin first joined the fire department in 1961 and was promoted to captain in 1967. Between 1971 to 1977 he served as the deputy fire chief.

Salt Spring Fire Department says he was a lifetime honourary member of the Salt Spring Island Firefighters’ Association.Sign up for our newsletter to get breaking news and daily digests sent to your email.“Our condolences to his son, retired Captain Kurt Irwin, his family, and all his loved ones. May he rest easy,” the department said in a statement on Facebook.
