Salman Rushdie attended the PEN America gala on Thursday night in New York, less than a year after he was stabbed at a literary event. In a rare public appearance, the 75-year-old author joked it was"nice to be back – as opposed to not being back, which was also an option" and that he was"pretty glad the dice rolled this way."Last August,"The Satanic Verses" author was stabbed repeatedly onstage at a speaking event in Chautauqua, New York; he was airlifted to a hospital while the suspect was captured on the scene.
"If it had not been for these people, I most certainly would not be standing here today," he explained."The courage, that day, was all theirs."
