The meeting marks the county's first change in leadership in more than two decades, following Nelson Wolff's retirement at the end of the year.
At his swearing-in ceremony Sakai said he would use the new role to create public-private partnerships between public schools and local employers.
“I want to get the small businesses tied to the public schools so we can create apprentice programs,” he said. “What we need to do is make sure that when kids finish high school, if they want to go to college, fine, but if they don’t want to go to college, they go straight into job training.”Sakai and recently reelected commissioners Justin Rodriguez and Tommy Calvert will take an oath of office.
