The Peacocks became just the third No. 15 seed to advance to the Sweet 16, and that alone is enough to carve out a spot on the short list of the greatest first-weekend tournament surprises of all time.
The program that this team beat on Thursday night, the Kentucky Wildcats, practically lives on national TV, but Saint Peter’s was so desperate for a little extra attention back then that they offered free breakfast for any fans willing to show up at the crack of dawn for a game against Monmouth. And a couple hundred students showed up for the bagels and the basketball.“This is a very, very important day in the college’s history,” the deejay announced that day at a pre-game pep rally.
